Why choose a raised bed?
You get a higher level from the grass and a better working height in your raised bed. You can plant everything in your Corten steel raised bed, vegetables, herbs and beautiful summer flowers. You minimize weeds in your raised bed.
Always consider where you place your raised bed, do you want full sun all day or are you happy with a little shade? The soil in the raised bed doesn't dry out as easily as the soil in the rest of the garden. The corten steel retains moisture and reduces evaporation.
In hot and dry weather, always make sure you water your plants well when the sun isn't beating down on them. It's a great look with raised beds in a row, giving you a better overview of your beds.
Our raised beds are made without a bottom. This allows the plants and rainwater to better penetrate the soil and prevents the soil from rotting at the bottom.
Raised beds, planters and outdoor furniture in corten steel
Whether you plant in wooden or steel beds makes no difference. The steel may give off a bit of rust at the edge of the bed, but nothing dangerous to plants or soil.
A walk through the world's largest cities and newest neighborhoods reveals a major trend in outdoor space design. Maintenance-free elements in a raw steel look - corten steel. Where we used to see rust as a problem and something to be hidden with paint, we now see the red color as trendy, welcoming and warm. The red rust color is very similar in look and feel to wood, but with better durability and maintenance properties. Rusted iron look - corten steel - is the hot material of the moment. At byJEMA, we love the corten look!
Which soil should you choose for your raised beds?
When planting edibles such as vegetables and lettuce in raised beds, it's important to choose a soil that is nutrient-rich, well-drained and free from toxins and pollution. A good raised bed soil for edible plants can be made by mixing different types of soil and adding organic matter, such as compost or manure.
You can also add other materials like coconut fiber or perlite to improve drainage and air circulation in the soil. For example, a good soil mix for raised beds can consist of a mixture of garden soil, compost and sand or perlite. You can also buy specially formulated raised bed soil at garden centers and nurseries. These soils are often composed of different materials that provide a good balance of nutrients, water and air.
It's important to avoid soil that is too heavy and clayey, as it can clog and prevent drainage. Conversely, don't use soil that is too light, as it can dry out quickly and lose nutrients.
It's also a good idea to check the pH of your soil and adjust it to the optimal level for the plants you want to grow. Most vegetables and salads thrive best in soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
Finally, you may want to add fertilizer or other nutrients to the soil to ensure your plants get the nutrients they need to grow and produce a good harvest. Natural fertilizer (e.g. raised bed soil or compost) is often preferable as it releases nutrients slowly over time and helps build long-term soil health and fertility.
