When should you start planting?
Tips for planting in your garden
To give your plants the best possible growing conditions and opportunities to take root, it's good to consider when to plant.
Here we will try to give you an overview of when it is good to pre-sprout and when it is best to plant in the garden.
Seasons of the year
Spring
- Evergreen shrubs are best planted in August/September to avoid the risk of them drying out. Water all evergreens throughout the year (including winter) if the soil seems dry. They do not go dormant.
- Set onions in early April. Average temperature should preferably be above 7 degrees.
Summer
- Summer flowers, dahlias and gladiolus do not tolerate frost, so they should only be planted from mid-May.
- Strawberries should be planted in July, August. This ensures a good strawberry harvest the following year.
- Planting pre-sprouted vegetables.
- Beans (broad beans), carrots, tuberous fennel, kale can be planted in mid-May.
- Common green bush beans in early June.
Autumn
- Roses are planted from September to December
- New spring bulbs such as snowdrops, tulips and daffodils are best in September/October.
- Hedges are best planted in the fall.
- Fruit trees have the opportunity to take root and have moist soil around them.
- Rhondendrons are best planted in the fall
Winter
- Deciduous trees (i.e. shrubs that lose leaves) should preferably be planted from November to April.
Perennials
- Perennials are best planted in April/May or September/October. Flowering should not be until fall, as the roots grow slowly during flowering.
- Perennial herbs can be planted all year round. Always ensure watering during the growing season.
