Custom dimensions and flexibility

When do custom dimensions make sense?

When considering a new steel solution, the question often arises: should you choose a standard dimension – or does a custom dimension make sense?

At byJEMA, we work with both. Not because custom dimensions are always better, but because the right solution depends on space, function and proportions. This page helps you understand the difference – and make a more informed choice.

Why standard dimensions are often the best choice

Standard dimensions are developed based on experience – and at byJEMA, also based on a modular principle.

The majority of our solutions are built from modules and fixed standard lengths that can be combined in multiple ways. In practice, this means you can create solutions that fit your space without compromising on construction, delivery time or flexibility.

Standard dimensions take proportions, load and use into account and function as building blocks that can be expanded or adjusted over time.

The advantages of standard dimensions include:

  • thoroughly tested constructions
  • modular design with multiple configuration options
  • shorter delivery times
  • a clear balance between function and aesthetics

In many cases, a standard dimension is therefore not a compromise – but the most well-considered choice.

When custom dimensions add real value

There are situations where custom dimensions make sense.

This may be when:

  • the space has specific dimensions or constraints
  • the solution must fit precisely between existing elements
  • functional requirements differ from standard use
  • proportions are crucial to the overall expression

In these cases, custom dimensions can ensure that the solution both performs better in use and appears more calm and integrated within the space.

Typical challenges that guidance and 3D approval help avoid

When working with custom dimensions, it is essential that the solution is carefully considered before production begins. That is why we always prepare 3D drawings for customer approval, allowing proportions, dimensions and construction to be evaluated as a whole – and adjustments to be made in time.

The challenges we most often help avoid are not related to interior design or landscape architecture, but to steel, construction and function:

  • solutions that become technically more complex than necessary
  • dimension adjustments that offer no real functional benefit
  • constructions where proportions and load do not align optimally

We do not advise on garden placement or plant selection. Our guidance focuses on materials, construction and the use of steel, ensuring that the finished solution works technically and structurally – also over time.

How we work with custom dimensions

When we produce custom dimensions, it is always with function and construction as the starting point.

For many of our products, we offer a custom dimension calculator, allowing customers to configure and order solutions directly within predefined technical parameters. The calculator ensures that dimensions and combinations remain within frameworks where construction, stability and material thickness have already been carefully considered.

Whether a custom solution is ordered via the calculator or through direct dialogue with us, we always prepare 3D drawings for approval, so proportions, dimensions and construction can be reviewed before production begins.

Our technical designers and engineers assess:

  • load and stability
  • material selection and material thickness
  • compatibility with existing solutions

The goal is not to make a solution unique at any cost, but to ensure that it performs optimally in practice. That is why we say no when a solution does not make sense.

Flexibility is not unlimited – but well considered

Flexibility is not about being able to do everything.

It is about choosing solutions that can be adapted correctly – without compromising on function, durability or expression. Sometimes standard dimensions are the best choice. Other times, custom dimensions provide a genuine advantage.

At byJEMA, we help distinguish between the two, ensuring that the solution fits – both now and in the long term.
